Accurate Digging

Players work in pairs with a ball between them. The player starting with the ball spikes it to their partner who needs to get down and did the ball back to the spiker, who should easily be able to catch it. The receiving is trying to pass as accurately as possible.

Ball Bounce Control

Players stand in pairs with a ball between them and are required to receive the ball from high up, let it bounce, and then underhand the pass to the player opposite them who does the same.

4 Passing Drills

In Zone Receiving

One server stands behind the opponent's baseline and two setters stand in Zone 2 and 3. The receiver is supposed to underhand pass the served ball to the setters alternately.

4 Passing Drills

Receive From Zone 6 and Spike

The player at the back of the court overhand passes the ball to a setter who sets it back to zone 6. The player receives the ball and plays it back to the setter with an overhand pass before receiving the ball in zone 4 to spike.

6 Advanced Drills

Receiver Goes For The Kill

Two receiver stand in zone 6 and 6, while one setter is in zone 3. Another player performs a serve from the other side, and whichever of the receivers gets the ball, passes to the setter who sets the ball up for the spike.

4 Passing Drills

8 players per court, 4 players as feeders and 4 players as returnees. Change roles after a set time (i.e. 3 minutes). Feeders: Throw the ball with lots of height over the net in the direction of the player. The receiving player has to be in the middle of the court. Receiving players: Catch the ball and roll it back under the net to the player that did not have the ball before the practice started. Player should go to the back of the queue after each time.

3 Grass roots

Serve And Cover The Zone

Set up the same as in the previous drill. The serving players runs forward after serving while the receiver passes to the setter. The player who didn't receive the ball attacks the set and approaches for a kill. The server then tries to dig the attacked ball in Zone 1.

4 Passing Drills

Set Short, Set Further

Players stand in pairs on each side of the court. The player at the front of the pair attempts to jump and set the ball to the player at the back of the pair opposite them before moving aside. This player then sets the ball to the players at the front of the pair opposite, who does the same. The drill now begins again.

Throw From Behind Back

Players keep the ball with both hands behind back and throw it up and forward, keeping their body position the same as if they were receiveing/digging.

2 Warm Up

Touch the Floor and Underhand Pass

Players have to touch the floor with both hands before underhand passing the ball to their partner.

Players stand in a line in Zone 6, with the coach on the other side of the net serving the ball. The player receiving the ball attempts to overhand pass the ball into Zone 3, where a ball cart or something that they can aim for should be placed.

Players work in pairs and have a ball each. They overhand pass the ball high at the same time and then spike the ball off the floor to each other.

1) This drill involves a number (a minimum of three) of players standing on the baseline as if ready to serve, with a player standing close to the centre of the net of the receivers side (acting as the setter). 2) Players take turns to serve to the player opposite them on the other side of the net. 3) The player receiving the ball then digs the ball to the player by the net (the setter). That player then catches the ball and rolls it back to the server.

In threes, the players stand in a row, the person in the middle faces player 1. Player 1 then underhand passes the player in the middle, who return the ball back to player 1. The player in the middle then spins around to receive the ball from player 2, whereby he returns it using the underhand pass.

Players work in threes with one player in the middle. A player from the outside sets to the middle player before receiving the ball back. The middle player now turns 180 degrees and the player with the ball passes to the players at the other side of the court. Players on the outside set the ball once to the middle and then to the other side.

In pairs, one of the players throws the ball underhand to his/her partner. The receiver must: Stands in ready position Keeps their arms in front on themselves in the digging position Let the ball bounce off their forearms Hold the position

In pairs, get the players to face each other. Player 1 underarm throws the ball high to his/her partner so they have to receive the ball using the dig method, and then they catch it. The player who received the ball then passes the ball back to the partner who receives the ball using the dig method, and then catches it.

Volley the ball to your partner who volleys the ball to themselves one time whilst you do two block jumps this is then repeated by your partner.

Volley the ball to your partner who digs the ball to themselves then volleys the ball back to you, whilst they are doing that you do a dive, roll or something else then they do the same as you dig and volley. Do this for a set time or number of good contacts.

One player stands in Zone 3 and spikes the ball into the court. The other players, starting from behind the sideline, take it in turns to receive the ball, return it to the player acting as the feeder and runs to Zone 1. Once all the players are in Zone 1, the player feeding continues to spike the ball into the court but the other players must change positions from side to side in the backcourt.

This task will get your players used to receiving a serve and preparing in second fraction to dig up a spike from Zone 4 and Zone 2. Player 1 serves from the opposite side of the court into zone 5. Player 2 (acting as a back row player) then digs up the ball. Player 3 (standing close to the net in zone 4) then spikes the ball to player 1, who has to dig up the ball. Player 4 (standing close to the net in zone 2) then spikes the ball to player 1, who again has to dig up the ball.

Receiver faces three players who one after another spikes the ball for it to be digged. Change roles after the player has faced 3 spikes from each player.

Defending other players' zone ...

Players line up in backcourt area. The feeder throws the ball to either Zone 1, 6 or 5. Players' must dig the ball back to the feeder. However, the player standing in Zone 6 must move to receive the balls sent to Zone 1 and 5. The player standing in zone 5 must move to receive the ball thrown into 1 or 6 and so on. The two players not in the zonal area the ball has been thrown to must communicate with each other to see who will return the ball to the feeder.

Working in pairs, one player sets the ball to the their partner who moves to meet the ball using good footwork to bump the ball back to their partner who catches the ball. Ensure the player bumping the ball lets the ball bounce on their wrists and only makes minor adjustments to give direction to the ball (back to the setter).

Working in pairs the feeder spikes the ball to the worker. The worker has to dig it back to the feeder, and prepare to receive the next shot. Repeat for 10 spikes and then rotate.
