Volleyball: technique

Communication in volleyball is constant and essential. The three Cs - Control, Consistency, and Communication - form the foundation of successful teams. Teams that communicate effectively reduce errors, build confidence, and create positive team culture.

Pre-Play Communication

Setting up each rally:

Serve receive calls: Who has the ball must be clear before the serve.

Defensive positioning: Confirm defensive assignments each rotation.

Attack calls: Hitters indicate their availability and preferred sets.

Block assignments: Who is taking which attacker.

During Play Communication

"Mine" calls: Clear, loud, early claims prevent collisions and confusion.

Ball location: Calling "in" or "out" helps teammates make decisions.

Set calls: Setters communicate their target to help defence position.

Encouragement: Positive calls maintain energy and confidence.

Post-Play Communication

Quick debrief: What worked, what adjustment is needed.

Positive reinforcement: Celebrate good plays immediately.

Reset: Clear transition to next point focus.

Error response: Support teammates after mistakes - no blame.

Building Communication Culture

Practice expectations: Communication must be trained like any skill.

Leadership distribution: Everyone communicates, not just captains.

Quiet players: Help reserved players find their communication voice.

Consistency: Use the same words and systems in practice and matches.

Key Coaching Points

  • Communication prevents confusion and builds confidence
  • Calls must be clear, loud, and early
  • Every player shares communication responsibility
  • Positive communication maintains team energy
  • Train communication habits in every practice

My daughter is in 8th grade and has made the team this?

My daughter is in 8th grade and has made the team this year as she did last. We have a new coach this year who doesn't allow the girls to use their knee pads. What is the purpose of this?   Does it help at all with development of the sport?  It seems sadistic to me and I can't understand how causing the girls pain will help them to "dig" a ball or encourage them to dive for anything. Thank you

Its been a long time i am coaching the girls volleyball?

Its been a long time i am coaching the girls volleyball team in our school, for the past 10 years i am happy teaching the grassroot of the fundamentals of the game, but after 10 years I am beginning to feel this so called BURN OUT, and I am becoming inpatient to my players, sometimes i used to shout on them if they cannot perform the skills, they cannot execute the system of play, its always teaching them again and again the same technique that they cannot follow. I already gave several championships to the schools and some of my players are now playing in the higher league and the parents are thankful for the values and discipline i imparted to their children. Still, I am not contented or satisfy with my achievements, why do i feel this?

Summer volleyball club

I am a beginner volleyball player with skills in overhand and underhand serves, as well as blocking. I need to learn how to set and spike before joining the UNO Volleyball Club, which has a $25-$26 registration fee for tryouts.I started playing volleyball in 5th grade but focused on gymnastics and dance until now. I'm eager to improve my spiking technique and would appreciate any tips or drills for setting and spiking as I prepare for tryouts in May or June. Thank you!
